Directive #T3/8, dated 10 Aug 68, signed by Chinh for the Current Affairs Committee, SR 3 Party Committee, pertains to the preparations for X Campaign ((poss Third General Offesive)). The document reveals that during the post-offensive period, 15 Jun to 10 Aug 68, the friendly ((VC/NVA)) forces continued to attack enemy forces in SR 3 and gained significant successes. Friendly forces had killed 1,000 enemy personnel, destroyed On Thin and Ben Luc Bridges as well as many other bridges along Highway #4. These successes created a favorable ground for development of political forces and a firm stepping stone for the future offensive. As preparations for X Campaign, the document reveals that subordinate units were required to hasten the recruiting of replacements to strengthen the forces, prepare rear service facilities and promote the fighting spirit of personnel. Subordinate units were also to establish specific plans for a 30 days operation to include attacks on selected objectives in the rural areas, sub-urban areas, in Saigon, destruction of the GVN admin agencies, and development of the self-defense force and polit force. Subordinated units were to submit their specific plans to the Current Affairs Committee, SR 3 Party Committee prior to 12 Aug 68.
